Todd, I would suggest reading User's Guide: Programming Stata (ch 18)
and especially anything about using saved results.  Most simple
commands generate a list of results that can be returned with

.return list

You can manipulate these as "scalars" in your own programs.  One of
these was the r(sum) that someone suggested you use before.
