Indeed, but in this particular case I am working with a large number of files, and am setting up a process that will be repeated by others (with potentially different data files). Thus, examining the data beforehand to determine the correct types is not possible. Given this, the fact that -insheet- reads the data twice (see Bill's response at http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2007-01/ msg00114.html) is very reassuring.
