RE: st: Merging and applying ltrim?

Would it have anything to do with this:  when I describe the variable in my 2003 dataset I get:

us_id        str6   %12s

in the 2004 I get:

us_id        str12  %12s            


Is this what is causing the problem, if so how do I get them to be both str12? Thanks I am out of ideas and am stuck on this!
