I think this is a mata problem; it also happens if you type an unmatched
quote in a mata session, as in

mata:
"

with or without the colon. But "" is OK. So keep your quotes matched!

I find the same thing running WinXP Pro sp2 with fully up-to-date Stata 9.1.
