The -lcolor()- point is explained in another posting. 

I can't reproduce your other error. This works for me 
in 8.2 and 9.0. Is what you typed exactly equivalent? 

sysuse auto
 
scatter mpg weight, text(41 2650 "top car") /// 
         || scatteri 41 2100 41 2500 , recast(line) /// 
         || scatteri 41 2100 41.3 2200, recast(line) ///
         || scatteri 41 2100 40.7 2200, recast(line)  legend(off)
