An alternative that might work in some situations: If you want to share ado files with project members or a class, all of whom have access to shared folders on your network, you can have a command like this in your profile.do:

sysdir set SITE J:\nd.edu\userx\mynetid\statsclass

All your shared ado files can be placed in this folder (i.e. there is just one copy of these programs in a central location). See -help sysdir-

I suppose you could also have install commands in your profile.do, but it seems like that could be a lot of overhead to have those run every time you start Stata. Perhaps instead have an ado file that you ran periodically to make sure your favorite programs were up to date.
