I suppose that there is here a prima facie case of breach 
of copyright, but even the lawyers (and my wife is one, 
so watch what you say) say "de minimis non curat lex": 
the law does not concern itself with trifles. 
I think the practical issue is whether StataCorp lost out 
on a manual sale because one paragraph was copied from one 
entry. I can't swallow that. On the contrary, it looks like 
good publicity to me. The Technical Note was a nice clear
explanation of a tricky point and shows by example that the 
on-line help is not always enough. 
Also, Richard is one of Statalist's 
nice guys, helping out many people: what he did here was much 
more than what most people would do, and it can't see it 
creating a precedent. 
I for one am not going to scan in sections of manual to 
Statalist postings.
