Yes, indeed you are right - I access internet through the university server - just didn't know that that wasn't 'direct'. And I found its name within internet explorer as you suggested. Then I set the preferences in Stata and still it didn't work, but then your next message came and I followed that up and referred help netio and set the authcate username and password and bingo - I was home and dry! 
I accessed the ado site and downloaded an ado file to see if it would work and it did.
I did do a search for info re: net connection on the FAQ, but I guess I didn't chance on the correct key words.
