Another solution uses -statplot- (SSC)

 sysuse auto, clear
 statplot rep78 headroom gear_ratio, over(foreign)
 statplot rep78 headroom gear_ratio, over(foreign) recast(bar)

The default statistic shown is the mean (surprise).
