Interestingly, specifying the -start()- option seems to reintroduce the problem.

Elan,

I got the extraneous line, too. Stata 12.1 for Windows.

However, I do not get the extraneous line with this command:

. twoway (histogram gear_ratio, lpattern(dash))

This may be a workaround.
