Thanks to Kit Baum, a new package called -vlgen- is available from the SSC Archive.

To install the package, type

 . ssc install vlgen

Description: -vlgen- generates a variable and a label for that variable based on how the variable was generated. The program is similar to -labgen-, but -vlgen- fetches already existing labels when making the new label. For instance, if variable x1 has label "outcome", and -vlgen- is used to generate x2 = 1 + x1, then x2 will have the label "1 + outcome".
