Thanks Roger. One of my fears is that as Stata gets more and more powerful, it will get harder and harder for amateur programmers to keep up with it. When writing my own programs, I was amazed at how easy it was to add support for things like svy, stepwise, robust standard errors, etc. These new factor variables sound like they could be more of a challenge.
