You may well be aware of this already, but there are a lot of free geostatistical utilities out there - one of the best places to start is AI-Geostats - try <http://www.ai-geostats.org/index.php?id=107> for a list of geostatistical analysis packages. As has been said, Stata isn't super strong on geographical analysis, but in combination with freebie geo software you can get a long way without having to have access to a 'proper' GIS package.
