I also tried mat2txt, but
since there is no option to search in stata as to how to use it, I
wasn't able to try it out. In the web I also didn't find any guidelines
about the syntax for mat2txt.

????
findit mat2txt brings up the ssc package, which has a lengthy help file.
ssc type mat2txt.hlp would do the same.
The help file is also visible from the web version of the SSC archive
(well, maybe not for a Windows user...)
