Thanks
-descsave- did the job!

A possible solution to your problem might use the -descsave- package,
downloadable from SSC (for Stata 9 users) or from my website (for
Stata
8 users). The -descsave- package is an extended version of -describe-
and/or -ds-. It can list the names (and nothing else) in one no-frills
column if you type

descsave, list(name, clean noobs noheader)

Alternatively, it can produce lists of variable attributes including
names, variable labels, value labels, formats and/or characteristics,
using all the power of official Stata's -list- command. Alternatively,
it can output these variable attributes to a disk file or to the
memory.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes

Roger

Dear Statalist

I'm am trying to obtain a list of my variable names in one column ( I
have over 100 variables). I haven't achieved this but I have been
experimenting with the -ds- command, specifically the options
'varwidth(#)' and 'skip(#)'. Can anyone help with this?

One small point, the help file for the -ds- option 'skip' states the
default is skip(12) , but if I use skip(11) the following error is
returned 'skip() should be in the range 1..10'.

Eamonn
