Sorry to have come late to this discussion.

Stat/Transfer does not yet have an append option, although one would 
be a very good idea.  It does have a wildcard feature that makes it 
very easy to convert multiple files.  For example:

        copy in/*.xls out/*.dta

which will convert every Excel file in the directory 'in' to stata format.

One can then use Nuno's Stata program to append the resulting .dta files.
