Lest I give an impression to the contrary: I don't
think I ever got beyond the Preface. Those of a
certain age may remember catastrophe theory as
a five-year fad that offered hope of a new intellectual
synthesis, etc., etc., and was attractive in the sense
that a TV documentary or a _Scientific American_ article
or a reading of semi-popular accounts on a wet weekend
afternoon gave you an agreeable sense that it was dealing
with big, bold themes. Trouble was that you needed to
trip through several graduate courses in topology to
acquire real understanding, which rather limited the
theory's chance of (intellectual) world domination. So
it joined the zoot suit and the hula hoop and Rubik's
cube in the limbo of strange ephemeral crazes.

Back to my Mata problem....
