a 64-bit Windows computer:
I am eager to migrate from xp32 to Vista 64, but am not clear
whether I will need to upgrade my Stata/SE to Stata/MP for a dual
core machine. I understand that MP takes advantage of the dual
processors to increase speed, but my main goal is to increase the
memory available to Stata. Is there an "upgrade" of Stata/SE 9
from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Vista that isn't to MP?
Jeph is interested in migrating from 32-bit Windows XP to 64-bit
Windows Vista. This assumes that Jeph has a 64-bit computer
on which he is currently running 32-bit Windows XP.
Before addressing the Stata question, I will note that, rather
than waiting for 64-bit Windows Vista, Jeph could upgrade to
64-bit Windows XP to be able to take advantage of his 64-bit hardware:

Stata for Windows is available for the following operating
system/hardware combinations. It does not matter whether
the particular version of Windows is 2000, XP, or Vista.

Since Jeph already has a license for Stata/SE for 32-bit Windows,
he just needs to contact StataCorp's sales department by emailing
[email protected] to convert his license to Stata/SE for 64-bit Windows
on whatever hardware he has (most likely x86-64).
It is not required to run Stata/MP on a dual core computer, but if
Jeph wishes for Stata to be able to take advantage of both cores
at once, he will want Stata/MP.
