Thanks for taking the time help me on this. The problem I appear to be having is the nature of the panel. It starts like this:

| fip age race sex year ir |
|----------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------|
1. | Alabama 15 White Male 1980 .data
2. | Alabama 15 White Female 1980 .data
3. | Alabama 15 Black Male 1980 .data
4. | Alabama 15 Black Female 1980 .data

...

To reshape the data, I have to use a nested reshape option like this:

reshape wide ir, i(fip age race sex) j(year)

But I can't seem to find a similar option in -tsset-.
