Something Tommy Cooper never said, but I feel a Constantine Daskalakis
moment coming on...

Natuarally, Rich, being the ever so nice and helpful man he always is,
politely reminds _yet another_ listee that their Stata needs to be updated
before confirming that their 'error' really is an error. They then do that
and guess what, folks? Almost always, it isn't.

I don't know about you, but I read these posts thinking, "Rich, why bother
yourself? If a minority of users can't be bothered to -update- their Stata
regularly, then frankly they deserve to stir in eternal ignorance within
the pits of darkest hell." Well, either there or South Shields. (Al
Feiveson's recent reports of his occasionally frustrating teaching
experiences of promoting the benefits of Stata to non-users provoked much
the same personal reaction, but I restrained myself from adding my $0.02
that time.)

Sorry for such a violent reaction, but I really am getting fed up of
reading posts from people who don't check updates on their Stata
religiously - despite it being such an easy thing to get into the habit of
doing - and come on here wondering why they have a problem. Type -update
all- when you launch Stata before you do anything else. Indeed, in the
case of Ben Jann's -estout- and other user-written packages, typing
-adoupdate(, update)- would be a better bet.

"Okay, and _relax_..."

Whereever you go and whatever you do, just remember this. No matter how
many like you, admire you, love you or adore you, the number of people
turning up to your funeral will be largely determined by local weather
conditions.
