In addition, -hexdump-, or a decent 
text editor, can be useful for examining 
files, even binary ones.

That problem is almost always do to some sort of corruption in the 
file.  You should check to see if SPSS can read the file.  If 
it can (and 
your data are sensible in SPSS) please get in touch with me directly.
