A free update for Stat/Transfer Version Eight users is now available via
our automatic web update feature for Windows and the Mac or by download
from our website for Unix/Linux users.

This version will allow users of Standard Stata 9.1 to write strings up to
244 bytes.

In addition, the following changes have been implemented:

Excel
1) If a column has a variable name and no data, it will be transferred as
a numeric variable. In previous versions, these columns were dropped.
2) If a column has _any_ strings, it will be transferred as a string
variable. In previous versions the first data instance was examined
to determine the type of the variable.

SAS and SPSS
Substantial speed improvements.

ASCII
Support for reading and writing long (up to 32K) strings.

Specific changes for the Mac include support for:
1) large (> 2GB) SAS files.
2) reading SAS catalog files.
3) file attributes and creator/type codes.

Large file support is now enabled on Linux and all platforms now
support command-line editing.

Thank you for your support.

Steve
