It might help if you show us a snippet with representative data.  It
might be that -encode- is what you're looking for, rather than
-destring-

The force option would make them missing, right?
I actually need the data.  This particular variable contains the
verbatim response, which I need Stata to recode into numericals so
that I can categorize them.
