I don't believe this response answers the (admittedly somewhat confusing) request at all, it just happens to work for the sample observations given. It only works if one observation is completely unique on the 2 vars and all others form one group with overlap. I think the post was looking for a way of classifying cases into groups (most likely more than 2) if they match on either of two variables anywhere in the dataset.
