Dear Stata-Listers,

I am involved in performing a cluster analysis for a matrix consisting of categorical/ binary data. My question in this respect is: When it comes to the selection of linkage rules for an agglomerative clustering approach (single linkage, complete linkage, group average, Wards etc.) is there any restriction with regard to the selection of the clustering approach, i.e. is it reasonable to apply the Wards method for categorical data as well?

Thanks a lot for your help and comments.
