It is not clear how you are trying to "select" variables using -generate-. The -generate- command creates a new variable, and you have to tell it what the new variable is equal to (hence "=exp required").

If you tell us:
1) what you typed
2) what you were trying to achieve

we may be able to help.

I'm *extremely* new to Stata. I'm trying to select certain variables
I need from a large dataset, mostly using the 'generate' command. I'm
getting this error message:

=exp required
r(100)

I have used a similar set of commands for other datasets and haven't
gotten this message, so I'm a little lost. Any suggestion would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you.
