The read and write speeds of the hard disks involved might have a lot to
do with it, particularly in the case of infiling a large dataset.

Subject: st: speed: Mac v. PC

Hi Statalisters,

I've discovered that my ~2.5 year-old PC runs Stata jobs about twice as
fast as my brand new Mac. I am wondering - is this expected performance?

The relevant info:
Stata 9 on both machines, kept up-to-date
Mac: iMac running Tiger (2GHz PowerPC G5, 1GB RAM)
PC: Dell Dimension 8300 runing Win XP Prof (Pentium 4 3GHz, 2GB RAM)

(I realize you can't compare processor speeds.)

Example from a large job:
Job: Infile ~85 vars (x obs) from a file of size ~1.5GB - resulting
dataset size 675KB
Mac time: ~6-7 min
PC time: ~3 min

Can anyone comment on this?
