I would like to thank John Moran of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woodville, South Australia for drawing my attention to the problem of producing staggered multiple overlaid confidence interval plots, and to apologise for only having produced a comprehensive solution for people who already have some understanding of -graph twoway-. I am thinking about how to implement an easy-to-use solution, preferably accessible using the dialog. However, it appears to be a difficult problem, mainly because of the difficulty of specifying the default -legend()- contents in a way that works whether or not the user specifies a by-option. (See -[G] legend_option- and -[G] by_option- for further details.)
Cancel that last remark about -legend()- and the -by()- option. It is of course the legend contents that must be specified outside the by-option, and the legend position that must be specified inside the by-option, if the by-option is present. I am planning to set a default for the legend contents. The problem is therefore probably not as hard as I thought. (I was a bit confused and thinking aloud, and probably need to think some more.)

Best wishes

Roger
