Personally, I never install applications in "C:\Program Files", at least when the installer gives me a choice. The Stat/Transfer installer defaults to that ungainly root because it is a Windows convention, but you are free to Stat/Transfer in any directory you would like.

If the "shell" command in Stata is causing you problems, I suggest you simply re-install Stat/Transfer in another directory without spaces in its name (e.g. "c:\apps\st7"). Your fingers will appreciate your effort.
