You're quite right - I had been using the *var suffix which does put the
output into alphabetical rather than file order. Apologies for confusion and
thanks again for your help - problem solved.

I'm not sure what the problem is; -ci- returns its output with the
variables ordered as I specify in the command, in both v7 an v8:

. ci  var3 var4 var1 var6 , binomial
