Thank you Friedrich. You are exactly correct, that was the problem. Apparently, somehow in the process of transferring the ado folder from the original computer to the new one all the files had their permissions changed to "read only". I had spent several hours going back and forth with Stata tech support about two weeks ago, and we never checked that, or figured it out. In the end I felt somewhat foolish,as I figured it out late this afternoon, but only after I had followed some suggestions from Kevin Crow at Stata Tech support and we had removed my ado folder, made another one, and copied a single ado file in and tried to update it, which failed, but got me to looking at the file properties

Buzz,

You or Stata tech support probably checked this already: are the
files in the ado folder set to "read only"?
