I find Stata and SAS have different strengths.  Stata has been
outstripping SAS in the development of many statistical procedures.  In
particular, it did a great job of creating a suite of procedures for
standard epidemiology procedures.  On the other hand, I continue to find
Stata frustrating for data management and prefer SAS's data step
capabilities.
