Say the file is called file1.dta, then you can see the exact variable
names and their labels without opeing the file by typing:

desc using file1.dta

This can help when choosing which variables you want to keep and what
their exact names are. Lets assume the variables you want to keep are
called var1, var2, and var3. In that case you can open your file with
only those variables by typing:

use var1 var2 var3 using file1.dta

Hope this helps,
Maarten
