-codebook- with the -notes- option is ideal for this purpose:

*************
clear*
set obs 10000

gen byte question1= irecode(_n,0,1000,10000)
la var question1 "Answers to Question 1"
notes question1: This answer relates to the question: /*
*/ How likely is it that a boy will be born that can swin /*
*/ considerably faster than the fastest shark?

gen byte question2= irecode(_n,0,3000,10000)
la var question2 "Answers to Question 2"
notes question2: This answer relates to the question: /*
*/ How likely is it that a boy will be born that can run /*
*/ considerably faster than the fastest lion?

codebook, note

Eric,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately this has not solved the
problem. I know "needing/wanting" more than 80 characters is not the
norm for a variable label, but I am looking to generate a printout
with the original questions and some basic frequency distributions. I
think I might be stuck using R for this but just wanted to put out a
second call.

My best,

Mosi
