I too would encourage development of debugging tools for Stata and Mata.
Trace is a very blunt weapon; I suspect I'm under-using tracedepth.  I
usually resort to the ancient technique of inserting output commands as
checkpoints.  That's - di - in Stata and - printf - in Mata.
