Yes, R is nice in this regard, but Matlab is even better. Matlab will
parse most non-crazy LaTeX statements in text on a graph object without
any real trouble. R sorta kinda does that with the "expression" command,
but not really. 

This article is very helpful, however: Murrell, P. and Ihaka, R. (2000).
"An approach to mathematical annotation in graphs," Journal of
Computational and Graphical Statistics 9, 582-599.

Matlab will also generate semi-decent code from a graph that you edited
by hand. The code often needs further editing, but it's 95% of the way
towards regenerating the graph you want reliably later.
