You are correct.  Only syntax 3 of -test- after -anova- (type
-help anova postestimation##test- in your Stata Viewer) allows
you to directly use a term other than residual error as the error
term.

I agree that it would be nice if syntax 1 had an option for
specifying other error terms.  It is on my list to consider for
future development.
