Is there a way to add formatted text on plots (in the title, x-axis label or y-axis label) such as

m^2 (with superscript 2)
x_i (with subscript i)

\frac{kg \cdot m}{s^2} (a fraction and some extra formatting)

Or is the easiest way to do a plot without labels and then add them using an external program?

It's a shame that one cannot easily embed LaTeX code into Stata output as one can with, say, Matlab, but I suspect it would require a substantial modification to Stata to do so. Here is one possible solution that should work; it is, however, platform-specific: <http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/WFTPDF/>. HTH.
