As a follow up on my earlier question regarding grouping observations
I got (and built) solutions that work but that rely on sorts to put an
observation meeting my criteria in position 1.

If there was a way for me to set a scalar equal to the first
observation that meets my criteria, I suspect I could speed up the
algorithm a lot (and trust me, I need it... I'm probably about 1/4
through the dataset and my program has been running for well over 12
hrs).
