st: Is Stata used for spatial statistics/GIS?

Greetings,

Is Stata used for spatial statistics/GIS, including for teaching a basic 
course on the topic?  If so, what are its advantages or disadvantages 
relative to other software?  What's the best software for getting 
started with spatial statistics?
