The solution Nick C. and I have been talking about (programming the
characters into function keys within stata) only works for the command
line.  When I typed "windows keyboard macro" into Google, it came up
with myriad pages for products that appear to do this more globally.
I'm sure there is some free/share-ware out there that would map the
function keys (or anything else) to those characters pretty easily.
