Stata 6.0 requires the Appearance Manager extension for full functionality.
Macintosh systems prior to 8.0 do not come with this extension by default.
Mac OS 8.0 comes with Appearance Manager extension version 1.0. Mac OS 8.1
may possibly have 1.02. Mac OS 8.5 comes with version 1.03, and it is built
into the system instead of being an extension. Under any system that has
Mac OS 8.0 or greater, the Appearance Manager extension cannot be disabled.
Stata 6.0’s installer tries to install the most recent version of the
extension, and overwrites the older version of the extension if necessary.
Unfortunately, it can only overwrite the extension on English systems since
non-English systems have the extension Appearance Extension spelled
in the system’s local language (for example, on Japanese systems, the
Appearance Extension is named Appearance Kinokakucho). It is
possible that if the older extension is still installed, it will be loaded
instead of the newer extension. If this is the case, locate the local
language version of the extension and move it out of the System
Folder’s Extensions folder. Confirm that the new
Appearance Extension exists. If it does not, reinstall Stata and
reboot the system.
One drawback of this method is that the Finder’s menu will appear in
English rather than the local lanuage. At the time this FAQ was written,
Apple had not released local versions of the latest version of the
Appearance Extension. The best option to avoid this side effect is
to upgrade your system to Mac OS 8.5.
