Try it and see!  

Stata will adust the string length in the merged data set to accommodate the larger strings, so there should be no problem.

The only time this issue comes up is if one data set has a variable as numeric and the other data set has the corresponding variable as string.

Dear Statalisters,

My two datasets both have cusip variable. Its type is str8 in one data
and  str10 in the other. my question is: do I need to change to a
common type before merging ?
