I have no first-hand experience with what Springer wants to see, but Stata Press accepts .eps as the highest-quality alternative in graph export. Saying that something looks good in MS Word is not likely to have any relation to professional publishing. I would export all graphs as .eps; I have no problem viewing those when included in a LaTeX manuscript on my system, and they have excellent resolution, as in the books listed below.
