David has already figured out the solution to his problem. It migth be
a good idea to share it with others, too.

See -help creturn- to learn where Stata stores its settings (and other
useful stuff), some of which you can see typing -query-.

This may have been discussed previously, but...

Can anyone tell me, is there a way to detect whether varabbrev is set?
Or generally, how to detect the value of any other setting?
