I'll observe only that Edward Tufte in the same book proposed a reform
of the box plot on similar grounds, that several of the lines were
just fulfilling the same function. His minimalist version did not
catch on, and John Tukey in a latter paper was politely unconvinced.
When the best people in the field disagree on such details, there is
plenty of scope left to follow one's taste and judgment.
