Try replacing 
. reg VarA VarB if firmno==`f' & year==`y'
. predict temp, residuals
with 
. su VarA VarB if firmno==`f' & year==`y'

in your loop. 

I suspect there is a combination of firmno and year for which all of
VarA and/or VarB are missing, or perhaps for which there are no cases.
