It is practice on the statalist to ask follow-up questions on
the list and not privately. If you find something unclear then 
chances are that somebody else who is following this thread may
also find it unclear, and would appreciate to follow this 
discussion.

No, in Stata-lingo these are the helpfiles, while the manual is 
the paper/pdf manual that gives aditional information on top of 
the help files (the manuals in pdf format are only available for 
Stata 11. If you have an earlier version, then you'll need to 
find the paper documentation).
