I wrote the -sf36.ado- program well over 10 years ago for version 1 of the
instrument (at that stage it may just have been called the SF-36 without a
version number). If memory serves, Fred Wolfe had an early hand in the
matter. sf36.ado predates SF-36 version 2 and any of the sub-instruments
(SF-12, SF-8 and others. Presumably there will one day be a SF-1: "How do
you feel?", and scoring will thus be simplified. Though perhaps not

I wrote sf36.ado for a one-time specific purpose and have not used it again,
although for quite a while it was reasonably popular on the SSC hit parade.
I have no plans to write sf_nn.ado for version 2, though of course code
might already exist elsewhere in Stata-space. I would get perhaps half a
dozen requests each year to "do something" about the SF-36 so I reckon Jeph
will have a receptive audience if he produces a program in the public

About 7 or 8 years ago someone advised me about the attitude the official
keepers of the SF-36 instrument had towards 3rd party scoring programs. At
the time, one reading of some tortured legalese on an official web site
could be interpreted as meaning one could be at legal risk if such a program
was produced. Have no idea if that interpretation was correct or what the
situation is now. It certainly didn't cause me to remove my program from
SSC, and I leave it up there mainly to assist people who come across old
data sets with SF-36 v1 data.

I have also been interested in finding stata code for sf36 version 2

Has anyone written code to score the SF-12 (the Medical
Outcomes Study: 12-item Short Form)?

I found -sf36-, a utility for scoring the long form, but
it crashes if only the subscale questions are available.
Thought I'd ask before I started trying to write something
