Sorry, I did mix the variable names and dataset from the two different examples. However, I do have some serious problems with my installation, as retrying with correct variable names fails. I found another PC with Stata 10.1 installed and when I duplicated the same steps the stcox executes without incident.

I have been needing to install my version 11 anyway!

The latest update did not even touch -stcox-, as seen in -help whatsnew-.
Last time it was even mentioned was for the update 16apr2009...

Did I corrupt my Stata install or has anyone else noticed a problem with
stcox all of a sudden? After applying latest updates, Oct 1 version, the
stcox procedure fails to execute. For example:
